21 Sep UVIGO’S OURENSE CAMPUS PUBLISHES A PAPER ON THE NEW FLOOD DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM (MIDAS)
The article shows a flood early warning system, designed for the Miño River, MIDAS (Miño RIver FlooD Alert System), which starts with rain data provided by METEOGALICIA, and makes it possible to forecast, in a matter of minutes, the possibility of floods for the following days, as well as their associated risks.
The MIDAS, which is based on the HEC-HMS and Iber+ models, is totally new and makes it possible to know the possibilities of flooding in real time; this possibility could only be inferred from a comparison with the historical record.
For its validation, MIDAS has been used to reproduce the flow data measured in the cities of Lugo and Ourense from 2012 to the present day. Almost 3,000 cases have been analysed, of which the system was able to reproduce the real situation as recorded in the historical record in more than 99% of the cases, also showing a high capacity to reproduce those episodes of extreme flow. In this sense, the model has been able to identify most of the states of alert associated with large floods that occurred during this period.
In short, this system provides the Miño-Sil basin with a leading tool at both a Spanish and European level for the detailed analysis of flooding phenomena, both of the flooded area and its potential risk, and thanks to its modularity, it is easily adaptable to other basins.
