RISC_ML aims to “design joint measures aimed at prevention, preparedness, prediction and better management of extreme events, such as floods and droughts, in the Miño-Lima international river basin district in order to mitigate their effects. This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2014-2020”.

A better understanding of the international river basin district, the establishment of mechanisms for joint drought management and flood early warning will allow for greater preparedness and response capacity in the territory for floods. This is why this project would not be viable without the explicit cooperation of the responsibe basin organisations from both States, as well as of the research centers in the field.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • To achieve a greater knowledge of the Miño-Limia international river basin district, both at the cartographic and hydrographic levels
  • To improve existing management mechanisms in relation to drought identification and management in the river basin district
  • To establish a early warning system to enable a reliable assessment of the actual flood risk flood depending on the specific area of the basin

Planned actions

null

Watershed
analysis

Objective

To carry out actions aimed at obtaining a better knowledge of the hydrographic demarcation, it is appropriate to carry out a new mapping of the demarcation by redefining the existing perspective from the 1:25,000 to 1,10,000 scale and then to carry out an analysis of the water resources of the basin and its future estimation to 2070-2100 scenario, considering climate change.

null

COLLECTIVE
DROUGHT PLANNING

Objective

To analyse, among the existing drought indicators, those that most accurately represent the area of study and, potentially, adapt the existing ones, in order to subsequently elaborate a joint technical drought plan for the entire international demarcation.

null

Early
warning
system

Objective

Based on the CHMS flood early warning protocol, the aim is to improve its performance in order to obtain a fully reliable and effective system, universalised for the entire river basin district.

Control
and NATURAL
retention
PROGRAMME

Objective

Articulation of water control systems whose implementation will provide added value for the implementation of the first project activities, as well as the design of natural retention measures against flooding in specific locations in the Limia basin.
